TRIO Upward Bound Students Spread Cheer in the Community
Students in the TRIO Upward Bound program, hosted by Iowa Lakes Community College, spread cheer this holiday season in the community by donating blankets and hand-made greeting cards. TRIO Upward Bound students made 46-holiday cards by hand and mailed them to residents of Emmetsburg Care Center, Lakeside Senior Care in Emmetsburg, and Riverview Terrace in Spencer. They also created six fleece tie blankets, which they donated to the Department of Human Services for children in need.
A special thank you note from the Department of Human Services said, “I wanted to thank you for the gift of the blankets for a family of mine. They absolutely loved them. After I dropped them off, about 30 minutes later, I got a picture of all four children sitting on the couch with their new blankets. Thank you so much for doing this and helping families during this difficult time. Your gift was much appreciated.”
The TRIO Upward Bound program serves high school students from Emmetsburg High School, Estherville Lincoln Central High School, and Spencer High School. Students in the program receive assistance with career and college exploration, the college application process, financial aid application, college entrance exam preparation, and writing scholarship application essays. Students also receive instruction in financial literacy, leadership skills, study skills, test-taking skills, transitioning from high school to college, and improving self-esteem.
“Our students love to give back to their communities, and this was a small way that they could give back during a pandemic. TRIO Upward Bound is a great program that helps students achieve their dreams and obtain life-long skills. The TRIO Upward Bound staff focuses on helping students realize their full potential. I am an alumnus of the program, while a participant I received help in my academics, free college credits, skills to build my confidence, guidance in my career and college exploration, campus visits and cultural enrichment trips, and friendships that have lasted,” explained Nicole Heng, TRIO Upward Bound Manager and Career Coach at Iowa Lakes.
The TRIO Upward Bound Program offers many different opportunities focusing on the student’s success in high school and assists with a successful transition into postsecondary programs. TRIO Upward Bound also assists with a successful transition into postsecondary programs.
TRIO Upward Bound program is funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and serves Emmetsburg High School, Estherville Lincoln Central High School, and Spencer High School.
