Iowa Lakes Students Serve in Chicago

April 3, 2019

(Estherville, Iowa) During Spring Break, Iowa Lakes Community College students from the Laker Life campus ministry volunteered their time serving others on a week-long Mission Trip to Chicago. Instead of spending the week somewhere warmer or just taking the week off, the students decided to work with underprivileged children and prepare and serve food at shelters for people experiencing homelessness.

Each morning, the students volunteered at Breakthrough Ministries, which provide meals and a warm place to spend the night for those experiencing homelessness. They also served food at Pacific Garden Mission, which is the oldest, continuously operating rescue mission in the country.

Every afternoon, they traveled to New Life Center, which is an after-school program for children. The Iowa Lakes students spent time with the children, helping them with homework, playing games with them, and being a positive influence in their lives.

“I loved this mission trip so much. It was such a great way to connect with each other, get closer to God, and of course help others in the community,” said Kyley Anderson, a freshman from Spirit Lake, “Meeting the kids, and helping at the shelters was so eye-opening on what other people go through in their life. Sometimes we may take things for granted way too much!”

Hannah Seil, a freshman from Lohrville, added, “It was very eye-opening, and it was amazing to watch everyone grow closer to God, grow closer to each other, and serve others.”

“The mission trip helps teach students to become servant leaders,” said Brett Fuelberth, co-advisor for the group.

“We really want to thank the local churches and community members that help the students go on this life-changing trip.”
