Students plan open house at Spencer campus of Iowa Lakes
Students in the Surgical Technology and Medical Assistant programs at Iowa Lakes Community College in Spencer are planning an open house this month to help promote the medical profession.
“Anyone considering a career in surgical technology or allied health is encouraged to attend,” said Jodi Bents, a sophomore in the Surgical Technology program. Members of the public are also invited.
The open house will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Spencer campus which is located at 1900 Grand Ave. Guests will have the opportunity to tour the surgical technology and medical assistant labs and classrooms at the campus.
“We are very grateful for the preceptors at all of our area hospitals who allow our students to learn from their staff about the role of a surgical technologist,” said Assistant Professor Dana Grafft, CST, BOE, FAST. “Without the help and support of the preceptors and our area hospitals, our program would not be possible.”
Those in the Medical Assistant program are also glad to have a chance to show off their program.
“The need for qualified medical assistants is growing,” said Assistant Professor, Val Curry, CMA(AAMA), RN, BA. “Medical assistants develop skills in a wide variety of areas including clinical, laboratory and administrative areas of the medical clinic, allowing versatility and employment options in family practice, specialty clinics, chiropractic offices and hospitals.”
Those attending will be treated to snacks and have a chance to watch skills demonstrations as well as tours of the medical suites at the college.
Both programs are nationally accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
“Our laboratory spaces provide students with real-world experience and simulation opportunities that help to better prepare them for actual operating room experiences,” said Grafft.
The Surgical Technology and Medical Assistant programs are based at the Spencer campus of Iowa Lakes Community College. The Medical Assistant program has been in existence for more than a quarter of a century while the Surgical Technology program is currently in its 17th year of operation.
