Iowa TRIO Day in Des Moines
Twelve TRIO Talent Search students and three TRIO Student Support Services students recently traveled to Des Moines for Iowa TRIO Day. For many in the group, this was the first time
they had visited the Capitol building.
“Once we arrived at the Capitol we gathered with the other TRIO programs from Iowa in the South gallery of the Senate,” said Kim Campbell, TRIO Talent Search Coordinator. “State Senator David Johnson gave a warm welcome to everyone during a recess of the Senate. He pointed out some of the ‘hot’ topics that are on the floor of the Senate and House right now,” she added.
The TRIO students and staff were able to ask Senator Johnson questions. Iowa TRIO President, Cindy Virta, welcomed the group and talked about what is presently on the forefront for TRIO, both statewide and nationally. Kim Campbell, Iowa TRIO Legislation & Education Chair, outlined the activities for the day.
Students and staff toured the Capitol, which included a trip up the 130-step spiral staircase to the dome of the building. Before leaving the Capitol, the group had the opportunity to also meet with Representative Megan Jones. The students introduced themselves and the counties they are from. Five students were given the opportunity to explain to Senator Johnson and Representative Jones why they benefitted from TRIO and why the Senate and the House should continue to support the All Iowa Opportunity Scholarship. There was also a question and answer time between everyone present.
Following lunch, the group traveled to Meals from the Heartland to volunteer time with the other TRIO programs in the state. Meals from the Heartland package food for delivery to malnourished people in Iowa, across the United States and around the world. Two hours were spent packaging meals and then the group traveled home.
TRIO services are hosted at Iowa Lakes Community College in this region.
