Iowa Lakes president receives statewide award
Iowa Lakes Community College President Valerie Newhouse has been notified that she will receive the 2017 Chief Administrator award from the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees in July.
Newhouse was selected based on her outstanding leadership.
The award is selected by the IACCT, the Iowa Association of Community College Presidents, College Board Secretaries and the Assistants to the Presidents of Iowa’s Community Colleges.
Newhouse just completed a two-year term as the chair of the statewide Iowa Community College Presidents group, is on the Governor’s STEM Advisory Council and has also served as the chair of the Iowa Energy Center, as well as multiple area economic development organizations.
She was nominated for this award by Janice Lund, the president of the trustees for Iowa Lakes.
“Valerie has successfully served Iowa Lakes Community College for over 25 years and as President for eight of those years,” Lund said. “Under her leadership, Iowa Lakes was able to leverage the positive community relationship and pass the first-ever capital bond referendum with 64 percent approval last spring.”
Lund also highlighted Newhouse’s community connections.
“Valerie continues to be visible and well connected to college students, community members and staff at five different campuses even though the administrative offices are not located on any of the campuses,” she added.
Newhouse is honored to receive the award.
“It is very nice to be recognized with this award, but it is truly a reflection on the quality of employees we have, along with the leadership and vision provided by our Board of Trustees. With everyone working together, we are able to achieve our goals,” she said.
The formal ceremony for the award will take place in late July at the annual meeting of Iowa’s community college trustees.
This is the second state award Newhouse has received this year. In April she received the Distinguished Higher Education Leadership award from the Iowa Women in Higher Education.
