Iowa Lakes instructor earns volunteer award

December 7, 2017

Volunteering is a snap for Dave Petrick, who recently received a Governor’s Volunteer Award from Gov. Kim Reynolds, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

“Most of the work I do is photography-related,” said Petrick, lead adjunct instructor of the photography program at Iowa Lakes Community College.

Petrick can often be seen on the sidelines at community events, camera in hand, ready to capture images and create memories—skills he’s donating to the causes. He’s helped at the FIRST® LEGO® League competition and the Dickinson County Relay for Life. He’s helped the YMCA, the Iowa Great Lakes Chamber of Commerce and he even takes pictures at the Volunteer Awards ceremony itself. Some of the events are short, and others last all day.

“I enjoy doing the photography and meet some great people will supporting worthwhile causes,” said Petrick, who has been volunteering for more than 40 years.

The Governor’s Volunteer Award program is in its 34th year, and just in the past year honorees contributed more than 31,000 hours of service with an estimated economic impact of more than $727,000.

“I’m pleased to honor those who have given of themselves to meet the needs of others,” said Gov. Kim Reynolds. “Their commitment helps improve the lives of those around them and consistently keep our state’s volunteerism rate in the top ten nationally.”

Petrick encourages others to volunteer for causes they support.

“It is a very positive and fulfilling way to give back to your community,” he said.
