Black History Month honored at Iowa Lakes

January 31, 2017

Iowa Lakes Community College would like to extend an invitation to listen to Dr. Damani Phillips, and guests, perform jazz music in honor of the Civil Rights Movement. The event is free of charge and the public is encouraged to attend.

This event will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 8. They will be performing in the Estherville campus gymnasium at 10 a.m. and in the Emmetsburg campus gymnasium at 1 p.m.

Dr. Phillips and guests will help honor Black History Month by presenting “Jazz in the Fight for Civil Rights”. They will discuss specific examples of how jazz music was used to high light and speak out against social and cultural injustices during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. There will be musical examples to demonstrate the music discussed.
