Community invited to attend Heartland Honor Choir concert

October 25, 2017

Eight high school choirs will unite to create music together at the upcoming Heartland Honor Choir at Iowa Lakes Community College.

More than 150 singers will participate in the mass choir, including students from Graettinger-Terril-Ruthven-Ayrshire, Estherville-Lincoln Central, Clay Central-Everly, West Bend-Mallard, West Lyon, Newell-Fonda, South O'Brien, and Pocahontas Area schools.

“The mass choir of over 150 area singers produces such a remarkable choral sound,” said Brett Fuelberth, professor of vocal music and choir director at Iowa Lakes.

The honor choir will perform in concert at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9 in the Estherville campus gymnasium at Iowa Lakes. Tickets will be available at the door and are $5 for adults. Students can attend for free. The Iowa Lakes Community College Chamber Choir will also be featured at the concert.

“It is a unique experience especially for the high school singers of the smaller schools in Northwest Iowa that don't have the experience of singing in a choir of over 150 singers.  It helps those singers gain confidence as well as give them an experience of a large, powerful choral sound,” Fuelberth said. “Singing in a mass choir like this is often a pinnacle experience for these high school students in that they are proud of the impressive choral sound they create, as they join forces with other schools from around the area.”

The Honor Choir will be conducted by Cornelius Koerselman, who teaches vocal pedagogy and recruits students for the music program at Northwestern College in Orange City. He received his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern and his master’s degree from Northwest Missouri State University. He has more than 30 years of music teaching experience. He has served as vocal director at Sibley-Ocheyedan High School, where his vocal jazz group was selected as Class 2-A state champions at the Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships in 2011, according to Northwestern’s website.

Singers gather to perform at a previous Heartland Honor Choir concert at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville.
