Student Testimonial: Laura

Time management is one of the most important concepts that a college student is required to learn in college. It is also one of the most difficult.

Laura Lovan of Spencer is making sure that she isn’t wasting any time.

In fact, it could be said that she is on a mission.

A graduate of Spencer High School in May of 2009, Lovan left to South Carolina just two weeks later for basic training at Fort Jackson for the National Guard Reserves.

Upon completion of basic training, she was sent to Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Sam Houston located in San Antonio, Tex. It was in the heat of Texas that she was trained to be a ‘68J’ or Medical Logistics Specialist.

Lovan completed AIT in December of 2009 … just in time to begin the spring semester at Iowa Lakes Community College in January of 2010.

Initially wanting to obtain an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), Lovan was guided by a counselor to try the CHOICES assessment instrument which identifies careers that are a good match for a student.

The CHOICES program identified nursing and elementary education as her two areas of interest.

Since Lovan already was getting the medical training that she wanted in the military, she decided to switch to an Associate in Arts Degree in pre-Education.

Lovan completed the two-year program in just one year … just in time to transfer to Iowa State University (ISU).

“The military really helps me to stay focused on my education,” said Lovan. “It also helps that we are required to keep certain grades in order to keep our military benefits.”

At ISU she will concentrate on a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a special endorsement in Special Education. She plans to minor in computer sciences and mathematics.

Lovan may be on a mission, but she also finds time for other interests and work. She enjoys reading, shopping and working out.

Lovan was recently selected to be one of several featured students in an Iowa Lakes television commercial that airs in northwest Iowa and southern Minnesota.
