Iowa Lakes ‘Best of the Best’ Veteran Friendly College
Only three community colleges in the nation earned the U.S. Veterans Magazine designation of “Best of the Best” for outreach, accessibility and support of military veterans—and Iowa Lakes Community College was one of them.
The magazine, published by DiversityComm Inc., chose Iowa Lakes due to its dedication to military veterans, including students and staff alike.
“It’s really great that we are being recognized for all the hard work we’ve accomplished in our effort to show support for our military members and veterans,” said Kent Schmidt, Veteran Affairs Outreach Specialist and Career Center Coordinator at the Emmetsburg campus.
In the last four years, Iowa Lakes has certified GI Bill benefits for almost 100 student veterans and their dependents, as well as opening Veteran Centers on the Estherville and Emmetsburg campuses, providing places for students to gather and receive social support from fellow veterans.
Iowa Lakes also offers military family scholarships for enrolled veterans and their dependents, as well as several other school-sponsored benefits and events in appreciation for their service.
The “Best of the Best” recognition from U.S. Veterans Magazine comes on the heels of several other awards, such as “Military Friendly” status awarded by Victory Media, the “Patriot” and “Above and Beyond” awards from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, and the “Certified Higher Academic Military Partner” designation as part of the Home Base Iowa initiative.
Schmidt said that the initiatives and awards were the result of a “total team effort that started with support from college leadership.”
