Student Testimonial: Kieja Puhrman Evans

As a three-sport athlete with a full course load at Iowa Lakes Community College, Kieja Puhrman Evans learned how to manage her time and prioritize tasks effectively — skills she still uses in her daily life as volleyball coach and elementary student success coordinator at Estherville Lincoln Central Community School District.

“…I was extremely busy throughout the entire year,” Evans said, recalling her time at Iowa Lakes studying and playing volleyball, basketball and softball. “I know many of those skills I learned there as a student athlete have helped me in my adult life and my current position at the school.”

Evans earned her coaching endorsement and associate’s degree in 1995, and then transferred easily to Mankato State University, where she was accepted immediately into the education program.

“I was able to earn in-state tuition due to my high grade point average at ILCC, so it made college a lot more affordable,” Evans said.

Small class sizes and personal connections to professors helped her achieve more success in the classroom. She especially appreciated now-retired history teacher Doug Lietz and math instructor Roger Harms.

“ILCC was a great place to start my college education,” Evans said.
