Student Testimonial: Brent Shatto

Including K9 officer Max, about a dozen police serve and protect the city of Estherville, led by Chief of Police Brent Shatto, an Iowa Lakes Community College grad.

“The time that I spent at Iowa Lakes Community College helped me grow as a student and athlete,” said Shatto. “The Criminal Justice staff of Jerry Larson and Butch Miller taught students not only how to be law enforcement officers, but to be good human beings.”

Shatto received multiple scholarships and graduated from Iowa Lakes with an Associate in Science degree in Criminal Justice in 1986, which helped prepare him for the job market. Many police and sheriff’s departments now require applicants to have at least a two-year degree, he said.

“The degree has also benefited me in the ability to advance in my career to my current position as chief of police,” Shatto said.

While at Iowa Lakes, he enjoyed making new friends and spending time with fellow teammates in the football program, which ended after 1996.

“The football coaching staff was also a tremendous influence on the team in how they should conduct themselves on and off the field as representatives of Iowa Lakes,” Shatto added.
