Doug Burton receives Outstanding Alumnus Award
The 2017 Jim Hall Outstanding Alumni Award was presented to Pastor Doug Burton from the First Christian Church in Estherville, during the Iowa Lakes Community College Spring Commencement on Friday, May 12. Burton, and his wife, Beth, and their two children, Chris and Kelly, are graduates of Iowa Lakes Community College.
Chris Fuhrman, Iowa Lakes Alumni and Friends Association President, presented the award memorializing Jim Hall, a 1968 Iowa Lakes graduate and strong supporter of the college. Established in 1992, the recipient is selected annually by the Iowa Lakes Alumni and Friends Association. It honors graduates who exemplify outstanding support of community, business and/or service clubs and serve as role models.
In addition to serving the role as Pastor, Burton has shared his voice with the college and the community. He most recently he emceed the college’s 50th Anniversary Gala as well as the Annual Sports Hall of Fame Banquet. He is also the court-side voice of the Lakers for most home basketball games.
“I have been blessed to be able to use my voice for many different events, including Iowa Lakes basketball games,” stated Burton.

The Sweet Corn Days parade passing through the city on Central Avenue will find Burton in the announcer’s booth in from of Steve’s Sales and Service, announcing each of the participants as they pass. He also lends his voice, and support, to the Annual Relay for Life and the Gospel on the Square.
The same familiar voice can be heard on the college answering machines providing school information, and on the phone message for the Grand 3 Theaters where his animated voice shares movie information for avid film lovers.
Burton is also a member of the Estherville Noon Kiwanis, the Estherville Area Ministerial Association, the Good Samaritan Society Advisory Board, and the Iowa Partnership for Success and Making Optimal Changes for Successful Youth (MOCSY).
“Jim Hall had his passions. One was football. Another was this Community College,” stated Burton. “He (Hall) shared that passion with the world around him. I am honored to receive this award.” Burton urged the graduates and attendees to find their passion and then share it with the world.
