Arnold J. Schilling Memorial Scholarship Established at Iowa Lakes Community College
A memorial scholarship has been established in honor of Arnie Schilling to celebrate the commitment he had to enrich so many area students' lives. During his 57-year teaching career, which included many years as an instructor at Iowa Lakes Community College, he taught hundreds of students in English, music, and the humanities. Schilling had a special talent for connecting with and encouraging students. Schilling strongly believed that education and learning are critical to personal development and that everyone should have the right to learn and pursue their goals at every stage of life.
Through the scholarship, Schillings' family hopes to honor a student who has consistently demonstrated a commitment to hard work and shown the desire to improve themselves regardless of their age or situation.
"Arnie's daughter, Vicki, and I visited about Arnie and his philosophy for guiding his students, regardless of their background," said Jolene Rogers, Executive Director Community, and Business Relations. "She shared that while the majority of his teaching was at the high school level, he also found it rewarding to teach non-traditional students at the college level, especially those who felt intimidated by their return to college courses. He liked to remind them that their experiences outside the classroom had also educated them and that classroom activities were an extension of their continued learning. Schilling inspired many of his students to continue their studies and earn baccalaureate degrees."
"I genuinely enjoyed visiting with Arnie and seeing him on campus. He shared his love of music and was a champion for students who demonstrated a commitment to working hard and learning from their experiences," Rogers added.
The scholarship is open to all students. Priority consideration will be given to students who plan to participate in the Arts at Iowa Lakes Community College and non-traditional students. One student will be selected annually to receive a $500 scholarship, which may be used to alleviate any expenses associated with tuition, books, fees, or housing. The scholarship application is available at www.iowalakes.edu/scholarships.
