Wind Energy & Turbine Technology

Wind Energy & Turbine Technology

Since rolling out the nation’s first Associate in Applied Science Degree in Wind Energy and Turbine Technology in 2004, Iowa Lakes has been a leader in delivering training and education to meet a steadily growing demand for operations and maintenance (O&M) technicians across the country and abroad.

In January 2011, Iowa Lakes was one of the first three programs nationwide to earn the American Wind Energy Association’s Seal of Approval for Wind Turbine Service Technician Programs.

With a focus on the utility scale O&M technician, there are many facets to this industry. You are exposed to a broad range of subjects for the skills you need to enter a growing technical workforce and transcend different sectors of the renewable energy field. From the college’s working utility scale turbines, to ground trainers and laboratories, you get a sense of realism by putting your hands on equipment and components you see in the field.

We have a diploma program and an Associate of Applied Science degree available to our students.

The diploma program can be completed during of the first three semesters of the program. It is a good choice for those that have past maintenance or electrical experience but need a better understanding of wind turbine operations, and safety. It will prepare you for an entry-level position in the industry.

A complete list of the diploma courses can be found here.

Our Associate in Applied Science degree is a two-year program. We start you with the basics of how to climb a tower safely and end wiring motor starter circuits and programming programmable logic controllers. As a graduate of the two-year degree program you not only have the skills necessary to qualify for entry-level positions but you have the knowledge that will allow you to be successful throughout your future career.

Jacob HansenJacob Hansen
Wind Energy & Turbine Technology

"Because of Iowa Lakes's Wind program having so much prestige in the wind industry, we had a lot of wind companies come in and meet with us. This allowed us to have great job opportunities once we graduated. Without Iowa Lakes I would not have the career I do now." Read More

Chava Wind Prototype

Chava Wind engineers are putting the final touches on a 3-bladed vertical axis wind turbine being prototyped at the Iowa Lakes Community College Farm. The new rotor will replace the existing 2-bladed rotor shortly. As pleasing to the eye as it is to the environment, it will form part of a sustainability model being implemented at the farm to illustrate the sensibility of distributed wind power applications.
