ASSET and COMPASS
Iowa Lakes requires assessment scores for all students. These assessments place students into appropriate academic courses.
ACT, ASSET or COMPASS may be used for the areas of writing, reading and mathematics.
COMPASS is an untimed, computerized test that helps your college evaluate your skills and place you into appropriate courses. COMPASS offers tests in reading, writing, math, writing essay, and English as a Second Language (ESL). You will receive your COMPASS test results immediately upon completion of testing, and your score report will include placement messages informing you what courses you should take and how to register.

ASSET is a timed paper-and-pencil test. The use of calculators is not allowed on the numerical skills test of ASSET, but is allowed on other math tests. After completing the assessment, an advisor will help you identify your skills and compare them to recommended scores for entry into specific courses. You will also learn about resources at Iowa Lakes Community College that can help you reach your goals.
A taped version of ASSET is available for students who need accommodations.
