Alta Company Named Small Business of the Year

May 21, 2010

How fast is the wind blowing? How often does the wind blow?

These are but a couple of the questions investors what to know before planning the installation of a wind turbine generator. One of the most important steps in the planning of a wind site is the collection of accurate and verifiable wind speed and direction data.

Anemometry Specialists in Alta has over 55 years of combined experience constructing and maintaining wind test towers. In addition to installing towers, they also provide data collection, quality control, data analysis, professional meteorological reporting, equipment procurement and site assessment.

“I was inspired to start my own business when I was let go from my previous job,” commented Rob Hach. “I had the schooling and expertise and now was the time to develop a full time business.”

When Rob and Tara Hach started the business in 2002, they had two employees. The business has expanded to include a 50,000 square foot facility and over 30 employees. Branch facilities have recently been opened in Dumas, Texas, and Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recently named Rob and Tara Hach as the 2010 Iowa Small Business Persons of the Year. The SBA bestows this prestigious award on Iowa small businesses that have shown consistent profitable growth, community involvement and employee betterment. The company is a member of the Iowa Wind Energy Association and the American Wind Energy Association.

As a result of their statewide award, the Hachs travel to Washington D.C. on May 23-25 to participate in the National Small Business of the Year Award activities.

Rob and Tara Hach are founders of Anemometry Specialists, Inc., and serve as president and vice president. Both have backgrounds as entrepreneurs and bring strong business development expertise to the company. Rob Hach started his first business undertaking while in middle school and continued creating business ventures while earning a degree in Entrepreneurship from Buena Vista University. Tara Hach oversees the company’s financial management with experience developed in family businesses.

Anemometry Specialists is recognized as one of the leaders in Met tower installation services. They have installed over 1,500 towers in 35 states and 16 international locations.

Anemometry Specialists has partnered with the Northwest Iowa Small Business Development Centers (NISBDC) to build and improve their business structure.

“Our company had grown to the point that we needed to secure private placement financing,” related Rob Hach. “NISBDC offered several business plans and materials for assisting us with business plan development.”

NISBDC offers assistance to businesses that wish to develop a full and complete business plan for financing. A complete business plan offers a clear vision of the company future for investors.

Those looking for business assistance may contact Kelly McCarty, SBDC Director, at 712-262-4213 or kmccarty@iowalakes.edu. The SBDC is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration.
