Guides students’ development of a professional early childhood
education portfolio showcasing their knowledge, skills, and
dispositions in alignment with the NAEYC Standards for
Professional Preparation of Students at the Associate Degree
Level. Prerequisite: Enrollment in Child Care or Early Childhood
Education programs with at least 6 credits or previous
completion of at least 6 ECE credits.
ECE-113 Portfolio Development II, 1 cr.
Guides students’ completion and presentation of a professional
early childhood education portfolio showcasing their knowledge,
skills, and dispositions in alignment with the NAEYC Standards
for Professional Preparation of Students at the Associate Degree
Level. Prerequisite: Enrollment in the Child Care or Early
Childhood Education program; ECE 112
ECE-115 Child Dev Study Tour, 1 cr.
Visits designed to identify professional responsibilities in a
variety of child care settings. Observation and interpretation
of children's behavior will be practiced.

Instruction in universal precautions for handling bloodborne
pathogens, American Red Cross first aid and CPR for adults,
infants and children.

Focuses on current concepts in the fields of health, safety and
nutrition and their relationship to the growth and development
of the young child ages birth to eight. Blends current theory
with practical applications and assessments. Includes the

nutrition in early childhood settings.

ECE-140 Early Childhood Curriculum Planning, 3 cr.
Examines and evaluates early childhood curriculum and methods
leading to the development and implementation of appropriate
curricula for young children. Prerequisite: Completion of Child
Care Diploma Program.

ECE-158 Early Childhood Curriculum I, 3 cr.
Focuses on the development, implementation and assessment of
appropriate environments and curricula for young children ages
three through eight. Students prepare to utilize
developmentally appropriate practices in a context of family and
culturally sensitive care. Emphasis is on understanding
children’s developmental stages and developing appropriate
learning opportunities, interactions and environments in the
following areas: dramatic play, art, music, fine and gross motor
play.
ECE-159 Early Childhood Curriculum II, 3 cr.
Focuses on the development, implementation and assessment of
appropriate environments and curricula for young children ages
three through eight. Students prepare to utilize
developmentally appropriate practices in a context of family and
culturally sensitive care. Emphasis is on understanding
children’s developmental stages and developing appropriate
learning opportunities, interactions and environments in the
following areas: emergent literacy, math, science, technology
and social studies.
ECE-170 Child Growth and Development, 3 cr.
Reviews typical and atypical development of children from
conception to adolescence in all developmental domains.
Presents interactions between child, family and society within a
variety of community and cultural contexts. Examines theories
associated with our understanding of children.

whole child in inclusive settings.
ECE-243 Early Childhood Guidance, 3 cr.
Studies behavioral principles applicable to children,
appropriate methods of discipline and various guidance
techniques that may be used with children. Prerequisite:
ECE170.

An in-depth study of current political, economic, social and
cultural events and their impact on children and child care.

Supervised experience in selected early childhood
settings serving children ages birth through eight. Includes
integration of theory, research, and reflective practice.
Provides an understanding of developmentally appropriate

young children and families. Emphasizes professional
relationships and behavior, appropriate adult / child
interactions, basic curriculum planning, and program routines.
Prerequisites: ECE158, ECE159, ECE170, ECE243, ECE221 with 2.0
Cumulative GPA and 2.0 GPA in Early Childhood courses.
ECE-278 Early Childhood Field Experience II, 3 cr.
Supervised experience in selected early childhood settings
serving children ages birth through eight. Expands upon
student's first field experience responsibilities. Includes
integration of theory, research, and reflective practice.
Provides an understanding of developmentally appropriate
practices and the developmental stages of diverse
populations of young children and families. Emphasizes
professional relationships and behavior, appropriate adult
/child interactions, basic curriculum planning, and program
routines. Explores the overall operation of a program.
Prerequisites: ECE103, ECE133, ECE158, ECE159, ECE170,
ECE243, ECE221, ECE262, ECE140, ECE290 with 2.0 Cumulative
GPA and 2.0 GPA in Early Childhood courses.
ECE-290 Early Childhood Program Admin, 3 cr.
Covers the basic principles involved in setting up, equipping
and administering a child care center. Emphasis is on business
procedures, insurance, funding, state and federal regulations,
staff and community relations, record keeping, policy writing,
program evaluation and child care advocacy. Prerequisite:
ECE272, ECE261, ECE140.
