New Program - Substance Abuse Counseling

This is a 2-year program designed to prepare students for their future career in the field of human service and disabilities.  Each student will complete a practicum at an agency in the field where they will be involved with professionals and apply their skills.

The broad course work provides students with a variety of skills and prepares students to work in a wide-range of employment opportunities which include:

  • hospitals and clinics

  • group homes

  • shelters

  • sheltered workshops

  • schools

  • government agencies

  • long-term care

  • adult day care

  • community education

Workers provide direct and indirect clients services to ensure that individuals in their care reach their maximum level of functioning.  You may also:

  • assist clients in need of counseling or crisis intervention

  • work in a half-way house, group homes, psychiatric hospitals, rehabilitation programs and outpatient clinics

  • assess clients’ needs

  • establish their eligibility for benefits and services such as food stamps, Medicaid, or welfare, and help to obtain them

  • arrange for transportation and escorts, if needed and provide emotional support

Human service and disability workers monitor and keep case records on clients and report progress to supervisors and case managers
