Basic Skills Needed in the Program and On the Job

Reading

Textbooks are used as a central part of the coursework, with the average reading level of first semester texts in the 9th – 10th grade level.  Other reading materials used in class includes service repair information, CD-Roms and satellite links.  Tests are a combination of lectures, texts and lab exercises.

Language
Speaking activities in program courses are fairly informal.  On the job, individual communication with the customer is essential, including pertinent questioning techniques. 

Writing activities include short reports and short answers on tests.  On the job it will be required to complete accurate repair orders.

Math
Strong math skills are essential for success in this program and on the job, including decimals, metrics, geometry, signed numbers, basic algebra, fractions, ratios, proportions and percentages. 

Thinking Skills
Students will need strong thinking skills in performing diagnostics and problem solving.

Computer
Students will use computers and industry software for accessing service information and diagnostic information. 

Student Success
Students will likely succeed in this program if they possess a positive attitude and attend class regularly.

  • Dealership technician
  • Service manager

  • Specialized or general technician
  • Vehicle/equipment sales
  • Machine shop operator

  • Visualize and create three-dimensional object from a flat object
  • Work independently of supervisor
  • Possess good eye/hand coordination for effective use of hand tools
  • Do detail work with precision
  • Plan a work schedule in detailed, organized and sequential order
  • Physical stamina to perform the work

Instruction is a combination of theory and laboratory experiences
