WHAT IS TECH PREP?

Tech Prep is a high school and community college program of study in a specific career field. It provides a minimum of a three-year sequential combination of high level academic education and high level technical career skills. Linking high school and college career and technical education programs, Tech Prep offers students relevant learning that leads to a certificate, diploma, A.A.S. Degree, or transition to a four-year degree. The students have the opportunities to explore career options and gain specific employment skills. There are Tech Prep classes taught by qualified instructors in all of the 15 high schools of Area III.

WHO MAY ENROLL?

Tech Prep classes are open to any public or non-public high school student who has met the basic ASSET or ACT requirements for admission to Iowa Lakes Community College. Permission must be obtained from the appropriate high school official and the student’s parent or guardian.

WHAT CLASSES ARE ELIGIBLE?

The high school counselor will advise students which Tech Prep classes are available. The student should contact the counselor to determine which classes are appropriate based on his/her ability and preparation. The student may enroll in more than one Tech Prep class.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

There is no cost to the student for a Tech Prep class unless the high school’s policy requires students to pay for non-passing grades or withdrawals from the class. The school district contracts with Iowa Lakes Community College for the cost of tuition and fees. Books and materials are provided by the school district.

WHAT ABOUT CREDIT TRANSFER?

It is the student’s responsibility before enrolling in Tech Prep classes to first check with the high school counselor and then the institution being considered for transfer to determine which classes will be accepted for credit.

WHERE WILL I ATTEND CLASS?

Classes are taught in the student’s high school by qualified instructors during the normal school schedule.

HOW DO I START?

The student and high school counselor determine which classes are appropriate based on the student’s ability and career interests. Registration forms must be completed by the student and signed by the correct high school official. A parent’s signature is required on the registration form if the student is under the age of 18. Attendance and grade reports must be submitted by the instructor.
