Basic Skills Needed in the Program and On the Job
Reading
Textbooks are used to
supplement lectures and hands-on experience. Other reading materials used
in the program include periodicals, Internet sources, bulletins and fact
sheets. Tests are based on information taught in lectures, worksheets and
textbooks.
Language
One-on-one
communication, with accurate expression of ideas is important. Some small
group interaction is also expected as part of the program. On the job,
there may be the opportunity to give presentations to service organizations
and boards of directors.
Writing activities will
take the form of written responses expressing opinions, journal entries, and
short answer essays on tests.
Math
Math activities
integrated into the program and needed on the job include ratios,
proportions, percentages, simple algebra, geometry, accounting and
estimations. Also, being able to convert English units to metric will be
helpful.
Thinking Skills
Students will need to
make decisions based on experience, research, education and personal ideas,
including analyzing, problem-solving, and applying technical information.
Computer
Computers are used for
online information searches, spreadsheets, accounting, word processing and
some database entry.
Student Success
Students who have a
desire to succeed will generally do well in the program. Students will also
succeed if they possess entrepreneurial skills/talents, are confident, have
a desire to learn, and understand that education is a life-long endeavor.
