LAKER GOLFERS TURN IN OPENING ROUND SCORES
IN PHOENIX
Members of the Iowa Lakes Men’s Golf Team
ended their opening rounds in respectable
fashion at the NJCAA Division II National
Men’s Golf Tournament at Palm Valley Golf
Course in Phoenix, Ariz.
Tom Thompson of Kimball, S.D., shot an
opening round 76, which was the best score
turned in by a Laker Golfer in the first
round.
“Tom hit it pretty good most of the day,”
said Coach Dan Soper. “He really didn't get
into too much trouble today.”
Ross Froehlich of Algona shot a 79 in the
first round of the tournament; good enough
to give him the second best score for an
Iowa Lakes player.
“Ross played well most of the day after a
shaky start,” said Soper. “He was only three
over going into #16, but made a quadruple
(7) on the par three which really hindered
his overall score.”
Nick Christensen of Mission, Texas, shot an
opening round 84 and never really got a feel
for the course.
“Nick had nine penalty strokes which really
hurt him, and I think he will learn from it
and post a good score tomorrow,” said Coach
Soper.
Due to the staggered tee times, the golfers
will not be sure of her standing versus the
field until everyone has completed the
opening round. Later this evening, scores
can be found at
www.golfstat.com
under the College Golf Coverage headline, by
clicking on the ‘Men’ link in the May 19
NJCAA line (near the middle of the page).
The Iowa Lakes Golfers have tee-times
between 1 & 1:30 p.m. tomorrow (May 21), and
will look to the heat to be the biggest
challenge.
“It got to 100 degrees today in Phoenix and
with the afternoon tee-times tomorrow, the
heat will be a huger factor,” said Soper.
“We will have to make sure the men stay
hydrated tonight and keep hydrated during
their round tomorrow.
