LAKES ANNOUNCES RECRUITS FOR 2008-2009 MEN’S
AND WOMEN’S GOLF
Iowa Lakes Community College Golf Coach Dan
Soper has announced the signing of six golf
recruits to National Letters of Intent for
the 2008-2009 season. Joining the men’s
program are Scott Benson of Jackson, Minn.;
AJ Appel of Joice; Joel Keady of Orange
City; and Jarvis Weber of Welcome, Minn.
Joining the women’s program are Katie Heddinger of Emmetsburg; and Lauren Hartman
of Northwood.
Benson, coming into his senior year has been
a four-time state participant for Jackson
County Central and has finished as high as 3rd
individually at the Minnesota State
Tournament. “I have known Scott for several
years since he first starting playing junior
golf,” Coach Soper stated. “Scott is a
tremendous player and competitor, who has
earned numerous honors in golf.” Soper
added, “He has a great deal of competitive
experience and will make an immediate impact
in Region XI.”
Appel has been an all Conference performer
for three years for Lake Mills High School
and was also named North Iowa Junior Tour
Player of the year in 2005. “AJ has
continued his great play and is having a
great senior year on the links.” Soper
added, “He has a great swing and passion for
the game and I expect him to be a solid
performer for us over the next two years.”
Keady has been an all Siouxland Conference
performer and also part of MOC Floyd Valley
Conference championship teams in 2006 and
2007. “Joel is also having a very good
senior year and has shown great strides in
his game.” Soper added, “Joel is a very good
ball striker and as he gains more experience
will develop into a very good player.”
Weber, is a three-time all conference
performer, 2007 section Medalist for Martin
County West High School and a two-time state
participant heading into his senior year.
“Jarvis is a great competitor and leader.”
Soper added, “He has played really well this
spring and I expect him to step in right
away and contribute to our program’s
success.”
Heddinger is an all Lakes conference
performer for Emmetsburg and Coach Ted
Riley. “Katie has a very solid fundamental
swing and is capable of shooting low
scores.” Soper added, “She will step in and
make a very positive impact on our women’s
program.”
Hartman has earned 2005 newcomer of the year
and 2006 and 2007 MVP honors for the girls
program at Northwood-Kensett High School.
“Lauren has been very active in many
ventures in high school and I really like
her work ethic,” Soper said. “She is very
coachable and I believe her best golf is
ahead of her.”
These young men and women will be joining an
Iowa Lakes program whose men’s program has
set an all time match victories record this
year and a women’s program that finished
third in Region XI and qualified their 20th
National individual qualifier under Coach
Dan Soper.
“I am very pleased to have such an
outstanding group of young men and women
join our program. Beyond their golf talents
they are just exceptional young people,”
Soper said. “They all have great family
support and I feel privileged to have the
opportunity to lead this group.”
Scott Benson is the son of Nate and Kelly
Benson of Jackson; AJ Appel is the son of
Rebecca and Dave Arneson of Joice and Russ
Appel of Webster City; Joel Keady is the son
of Jeff and Deborah Keady of Orange City;
Jarvis Weber is the son of Ken and Vickie
Weber of Welcome; Katie Heddinger is the
daughter of John and Jeri Heddinger of
Emmetsburg; and Lauren Hartman is the
daughter of Steve and Lisa Hartman of
Northwood.
