TOM SPALDING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED AT
IOWA LAKES
Iowa Lakes Community College is announcing the
establishment of the Tom Spalding Memorial
Scholarship.
Spalding was the Director of Records and
Registration at Iowa Lakes Community College
from 1981 to his retirement in December of 2002.
He recently passed away after a short illness.
Iowa Lakes Instrumental Music/Jazz Band
Professor Carol Ayres stated, “Tom had a great
love for music and students, an enthusiasm for
life and learning, and was an incredible asset
to our college, especially the music department.
He would always arrive with a smile, a story,
and a willingness to do anything from playing
the bass, trumpet, trombone to sorting music or
teaching a lesson to a student who just wanted
to learn! He will be dearly missed.”
Eligible candidates for the Tom Spalding
Memorial Scholarship must audition and be
accepted into the Iowa Lakes Community College
Jazz Band. Two recipients will be selected
annually and the scholarship award must be used
for tuition, fees or books.
“Tom’s love for music was obvious through his
participation in the Iowa Lakes Community
College Jazz Band, Northwest Iowa Concert Band,
and Northwest Iowa Jazz Band,” stated Shan Ray,
Iowa Lakes Institutional Advancement Executive
Director. She continued, “His family and friends
felt it only appropriate to create a memorial
scholarship that would benefit students who
share his passion.”
