IOWA LAKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO HOST 2008 WOMEN’S REGION XI GOLF TOURNAMENT IN OKOBOJI

Iowa Lakes will host the 2008 Women’s Region XI golf tournament at Brooks National Golf Club in Okoboji this weekend.

The tournament dates are Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26.  Practice rounds will be played on Thursday, April 24.

“Heading into the Regional Tournament, I would say Des Moines Area Community College is a heavy favorite as they have a very solid team, lead by Orange City native Savanah Krull,” said Iowa Lakes Head Coach Dan Soper.  “After that from a team race it is wide open.”

He also added, “In addition to the team champion, any individual who finishes in the top 10 earns an automatic berth in the NJCAA National Tournament in Daytona Beach, FL on May 12 – 15, so all the golfers have a lot to play for.”

Being the hosting team is a great asset to the Iowa Lakes golfers, and they intend to take full advantage.

“Playing on our home course has a huge mental advantage and I have been around the game long enough to know anything can happen.  We have some players who will be in the mix and it should be exciting to see it play out,” said Coach Soper.

The Laker women participating in the Region XI tournament are sophomore Sarah Subbert, Graettinger; and freshmen Abby Hohensee, Pocahontas; Roxy Headley, Emmetsburg; Ricca Soper, Estherville; and April Wolf, Algona.

Subbert is the only returning letter winner for the Laker women, and she also achieved Academic All-Region status as a freshman.

Hohensee was an All-Conference player and district medalist at Pocahontas Area.  Headley was an All-Conference player at Emmetsburg, and was an All-District selection as well.  Soper was a three-time All-Conference selection at Estherville Lincoln Central and was a two-time Lakes Conference medalist.  Wolf placed in the top 10 three times at the state tournament in her high school career at Bishop Garrigan and her team claimed the state championship three times.

The Laker Women have competed in three tournaments this season.  The team placed fourth out of six at the Iowa Western Invite in Council Bluffs, with Soper finishing as a medalist and Wolf & Subbert placing in the top 20.

The team again placed fourth at the Grandview Invite in Fort Dodge, but this time the field was much larger, boasting 11 teams.  Soper placed fifth overall and was named to the all-tournament team.  Wolf also had a good showing, finishing 12th overall.

And, at the Iowa Central Invite in Fort Dodge, the Laker women placed third as a team; their highest finish of the season.  Again it was Soper leading the way for the Lakers, placing in the top 10.  Wolf followed, placing in the top 15.

In addition to Iowa Lakes, community colleges sending teams to the regional competition include: North Iowa Area Community College, Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Central Community College, Des Moines Area Community College, Iowa Western Community College, Scott Community College, and Marshalltown Community College.

The public is invited to watch the practice rounds on Thursday the 24th and the tournament on Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th.
