COLD TEMPS IMPACT WOMEN’S GOLF TOURNEY WINNERS

Day two brought sunshine to the Region XI Women’s Golf Tournament, but the temperatures remained cold and were driven down by constant winds from the northwest at 40 mph lowering wind chills to 20 degrees.

Due to the cold weather, coaches chose to start play late (at 10:30 a.m.) with a shotgun start at Brooks National Golf Club in Okoboji.

DMACC won the team tourney with members Sam Pingel, Savanah Krull, Sharnae Winters, Brittni Katro and Marie Jeanblanc.   They will advance to the national tournament.  Also advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla., on May 12 – 15 were Morgan Brown, Iowa Central; Ricca Soper, Iowa Lakes; Brittany O’Brien, NIACC; Andrea Richter, Iowa Western; Candace Harless, Iowa Western; and Kayli Jones, NIACC.

“I want to thank the players.  I think the biggest accomplishment was getting 36 holes in and all the young women showed a tremendous amount of grit and character to complete their rounds” said Dan Soper, head golf coach at Iowa Lakes.  “We’re certain that the weather will be a little nicer down in Florida!”

Twenty-eight golfers finished the competition.  In addition to host Iowa Lakes Community College, other colleges represented were Des Moines Area Community College, North Iowa Area Community College, Iowa Western Community College, Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Central Community College, and Scott Community College.

Golf is open to both men and women at Iowa Lakes Community College.  To find out more information on athletics at Iowa Lakes, visit www.iowalakes.edu and click on ‘athletics’ under Quick Links.
