FIRST ROUND OF REGIONAL GOLF MEET HELD DESPITE LESS THAN IDEAL CONDITIONS

Although conditions were not ideal for play, the 2008 Women’s Region XI golf tournament hosted by Iowa Lakes Community College still started on time and finished all 18 scheduled holes.

The decision was made at an 11:00 a.m. coaches meeting that play would proceed, as scheduled, with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. at Brooks National Golf Club in Okoboji.

“We all (the coaches) made the decision to try at least the first nine holes and then go from there,” said Iowa Lakes Head Coach Dan Soper. “There were some good scores despite the weather today and this little bit of sacrifice will pay off for those who do well.”

The pay-off Coach Soper is referring to is an automatic berth in the NJCAA National Tournament in Daytona Beach, FL on May 12 – 15. The top team will advance to the national tournament, as well as any individual player finishing in the top 10.

Day one ended with Iowa Lakes’ Ricca Soper leading the field. She shot a 77, and is 3 strokes ahead of second place golfers Nrittany O’Brien, North Iowa Area Community College, and Sam Pingel, Des Moines Area Community College.
