TRUSTEES
START ‘NEW YEAR’
The
Trustees of Iowa Lakes Community College wrapped up one year
and began another at their monthly meeting held at the
Administrative Offices in Estherville late Tuesday
afternoon.
Their first
step was to accept the election results from September.
That board was then adjourned by Board of Trustees President
John Hand and the new board was called to order. That was
followed by the oath of office being administered to three
incumbent board members, Lynn Kueck of Algona, Jim Miller of
Ringsted and Susan Zulk of Spencer.
The
Trustees then elected officers. John Hand was elected as
the President of the Iowa Lakes Trustees and Jan Lund was
elected to the position of Vice President. In addition,
Clark Marshall was appointed to serve as secretary, and, Bob
L’Heureux (pronounced LURRER) as treasurer.
After
finishing other annual routine business, the Trustees turned
their attention to student leaders at Iowa Lakes. A number
of resident assistants in the housing as well as student
senators from all five campuses spoke with the Trustees
about their responsibilities. They also shared what
activities they have planned at their respective campuses.
In addition, student senators and resident assistants will
participate in a daylong team building and leadership
training session next week at Camp Foster. In January, they
will travel to Des Moines to meet with legislators about
issues that impact their education.
The
addition of another sport to the college line-up of
athletics was approved. Dr. Harold Prior, President of the
college; Troy Larson, Athletics Director; and Julie Carlson,
Dean of Enrollment Management; shared discussions with
soccer enthusiasts in the area who are very supportive of
starting competition at the college level. Organizers are
targeting a start date of the fall of 2009 for both men’s
and women’s soccer.
As the
college proceeds with efforts to begin its own radio
station, the Trustees approved an amendment to board policy
which ensures that board members don’t have a financial
commitment or role in any competing radio stations in the
area and that the college will maintain campuses at each
current location.
Also during
the meeting, the Trustees approved training agreements with
area business and industry.
In other
business, the Trustees approved four collegewide goals
effective for the next five years and then heard routine
reports from members serving on statewide and regional
boards. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, Nov. 13 in
Estherville.
