TRUSTEES SET TUITION FOR UPCOMING YEAR

Tuition and fees for Iowa Lakes Community College were approved by the Board of Trustees at their meeting Tuesday afternoon in Spirit Lake.

Student tuition for Residents will be $113 per credit hour for the 2007-2008 college year – up $5 per credit hour from last year.  Non-Residents and International students will pay $115 per credit hour.  Minnesota residents receive a waiver of non-resident tuition through a reciprocity agreement.  In addition to the tuition increase, the college’s Technology fee was bumped from $5 to $8 per credit hour in an effort to significantly improve the quality of technology at each college campus and to provide better computing resources to the students.  No mandatory fees were changed, although some other fees were adjusted to reflect the needs of the individual programs.  Tuition and fees are still at about half the price of four-year colleges.

The Iowa Lakes Report featured the Practical Nursing program at the Spirit Lake Campus which is held on nights and weekends.  Student Kya Kalsow, who is wrapping up her first semester of classes, addressed the Trustees about her experiences in the program thus far, including the benefits of the program and how this opportunity will impact her life.

Miranda Stover, nursing instructor based at the Spirit Lake Campus, shared statistics on the most recent nursing class.  The evening/weekend practical nursing students at the Spirit Lake Campus who graduated in 2006 did exceptionally well on the Iowa Board of Nursing exam, passing at a rate of 100 percent of the 21 out of 22 students who have taken their NCLEX-PN national boards.  College officials expect 22 students this fall in the evening/weekend nursing program at Spirit Lake.

Delaine Hiney, executive director of facilities management, told the Trustees that work has started on the Sustainable Energy Education Center in Estherville.  Also, the Trustees approved a new exhaust hood from Christians Sheet Metal for the Emmetsburg cafeteria at a cost of $26,320.

The next meeting of the Iowa Lakes Board of Trustees will be Tuesday, June 19 at the Spencer Campus of Iowa Lakes.
