IOWA LAKES OFFERS NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR
LEARNING TO AREA HISPANICS
Iowa Lakes
Community College is offering new learning opportunities for
individuals who need to improve their English Language
Literacy.
With the
recent hiring of Daniel Acosta in the Admissions office of
Iowa Lakes, the college is expanding its reach to the
Hispanic community. In addition to the English as a Second
Language classes offered by the college in Algona,
Emmetsburg, Estherville and Spencer, Acosta is actively
recruiting individuals for college credit classes.
“We are
finding that more and more Hispanic families – after getting
settled in the U.S. – want to raise their level of
education,” said Acosta, part-time Admissions Counselor.
“We’re now in a better position to assist them with their
educational and personal goals because we’re taking a
collegewide approach to address the needs of minorities in
our surrounding communities.”
A few months
ago, the college expanded its recruiting territory. Besides
recruiting internationally, Acosta travels to some area
schools, college days/nights as well as other events and
continues to serve as the Assistant Baseball coach.
“For those
individuals who need to learn English, we encourage them to
get in contact with Barb Grandstaff at 1-800-242-5108 ext.
5232 to get them started,” Acosta said.
To contact
Acosta for information on college credit classes, call
1-800-242-5106 and press extension 8378. Callers should be
advised that the college will re-open following the holiday
break on Wednesday, January 2.
Iowa Lakes
offers more than 100 areas of study at its five locations in
Algona, Emmetsburg, Estherville, Spencer and Spirit Lake. In
addition, the college provides training and retraining to
employees of area business and industry as well as
continuing education courses.
