STUDENT SENATES AT IOWA LAKES TO HELP ‘BUDDY WALK’
The student
senators at Iowa Lakes Community College will launch their first
fundraiser of the college year in early September.
The senators are
working in cooperation with Buddy Walk supporters and the food
service at Iowa Lakes. Thursday, Sept. 6, has been designated
"Scotch-A-Roo Day" at campuses in Emmetsburg, Estherville and
Spencer. Proceeds from all Scotch-A-Roos purchased that day will
benefit the Buddy Walk which is planned for Sept. 22 in Storm
Lake.
The Buddy Walk is
an annual event which was established in 1995 to promote
acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. Last year
was the first year for a Buddy Walk in northwest Iowa sponsored
by the Northwest Iowa Down Syndrome Society.
"Our student
senators try to become involved in each of our communities every
year and this is just one way we can show we care for other
people by supporting the Buddy Walk," said Bill Lapczenski,
director of auxiliary services and student services facilitator.
Scotch-A-Roos
sell for 50-cents each. Area residents are encouraged to come to
the college for lunch that day and help raise money for this
project by purchasing a Scotch-A-Roo. Those individuals desiring
a large number of bars (more than a dozen) are asked to call
712-852-5309 (in Emmetsburg); 712-362-7909 (in Estherville); or
712-580-8621 (in Spencer); at least 24 hours in advance. All
bars sold prior to 2 p.m. will be included in the tally for the
Buddy Walk.
The Scotch-A-Roos
will be sold at three Iowa Lakes locations: 3200 College Drive
in Emmetsburg; 300 S. 18th St. in Estherville; and 1900 N. Grand
Ave. (north end of Gateway North) in Spencer.
