PHOTOGRAPHY DIPLOMA – A GROWING INTEREST AT IOWA LAKES
While the
one-year diploma in Photography at Iowa Lakes Community College
was originally developed for students who wanted a career in
photography, it has since become a very popular option for other
students.
In the fall of
2005, the one-year diploma in Photography was created and
offered to students at Iowa Lakes. The Photography diploma is
under the umbrella of the Journalism and Photography Program
which is based on the Estherville campus.
Currently,
students who are working on their Associate in Arts and
Associate in Science degrees are adding the diploma in
Photography to their skills base.
Four photography
courses offered in the diploma include: Intro to Photography,
Digital Photography, News and Forensics and Intro to
Portraiture. Along with the four photography courses are some
general education courses such as: Composition I, a science
course, Fundamentals of Speech, Small Business Management, Sales
or Advertising Principals and Human Relations.
Upon completion
of the diploma and a two-credit internship, students have a
foundation in photography which enables them to open a small
photography studio, assist another photographer in his/her
studio, or work as a photojournalist. Some students just want to
be better photographers in their leisure time and therefore fit
the diploma into their other curriculum.
