LAKER FRESHMAN SETS RECORD

Freshman Cassie Hanson of Spirit Lake led Iowa Lakes Community College to a good start to the 2005 season at the Dordt College cross country meet on Friday.  Hanson set a college record at the 4K distance with a 17:25, breaking the old record of 18:24 set by Molly Duitsman in 2003.  Hanson finished 13th in the 40 woman field and was followed closely by freshman Mackenzie Eggers in 14th place with a time of 17:38.4, also well under the college record.

Also competing for the Laker women were freshman Juli Larson in 25th with a time of 19:20, sophomore Tara Wielenga 27th in 19:37, sophomore Kacie Schmidt 33rd in 20:16, and sophomore Alison Treanor 36th in 21:12.  The winning time came from Buena Vista’s Paige Gruis in 15:52.9.

The day was also significant for the Laker women as they scored as a team for the first time in the three year history of the program.  The meet was won by Morningside with 31 points, followed by Dordt with 48, Northwestern with 85, Buena Vista with 96 and Iowa Lakes with 110.

Four men also competed for Iowa Lakes, but the team was incomplete.  Tim Eisenga of Dordt set the pace posting a winning time of 21:30 on the 4 mile course.  The Lakers were led by sophomore Lance Queck in 15th with a time of 24:20.  He was followed by Joshua Eaton in 19th place in 24:42, Logan McDonald 34th in 26:39, and Cody Mortenson in 38th with a time of 31:01.

Both the men’s and women’s teams will be in action on Sat., Sept. 10th at the Luther Invitational in Decorah.
