UPWARD BOUND HONORS STUDENTS
Over 50 students were recognized at this year’s
annual Upward Bound Summer Banquet. The banquet
was held in the Smith Wellness Center on the
Emmetsburg campus of Iowa Lakes Community
College on July 19. Students were recognized for
their dedication to academic excellence and
their desire to earn a college degree. Awards
were given in the following categories: Critical
Thinking instructor Lisa Oberg presented the
class medal to Kristiana Salton of Ayrshire.
Honorable Mention certificates were presented to
Joshua Hill of Emmetsburg, Michelle Lyster of
Estherville and Kiley Rosendahl of Algona.
Math instructor Jeanette Frambach awarded the
math medal to Matt Hatland from Graettinger;
certificates went to Maya Odom, Graettinger;
Randy Kenyon, Whittemore; and Caitlynn Rouse,
Spencer.
Jacob Elliott of Spencer received the Science
medal from instructor Kris Roeber. Certificate
winners in Science included: Tracy Fay of
Wallingford, Joshua Hill from Emmetsburg, Randy
Kenyon of Whittemore, Thomas Markeson of
Estherville, John Odom of Graettinger, Michelle
Lyster from Estherville and Matt Hatland of
Graettinger.
On behalf of Spanish instructor Molly
Graettinger, Amy Maurer presented Thomas
Markeson of Estherville with the Spanish medal.
Honorable Mention awards went to Erin Forry of
Mallard, Michelle Lyster and Michael Paulson,
both of Estherville, Megan McGrauth and Maya
Odom of Graettinger and Caitlynn Rouse of
Spencer.
Matt Diischer, on behalf of instructor Tami
Tomkins, honored the following top English
students: English medal winner, Maya Odom of
Graettinger. Certificates were presented to:
Matt Hatland from Graettinger, Christina Trosin
of Armstrong and Jackie Klepper of West Bend.
Reading Techniques instructor Amy Maurer
presented a medal to Kyle Harding of
Graettinger. Certificates were awarded to Joel
McGrauth of Graettinger and Christina Trosin
from Armstrong.
Karen Ruddy, Research Projects/Library Skills
instructor, awarded medals to Michael Paulson,
Estherville, for “An Interesting Poem” and
Brooke Simpson of Burt for “Turning Back Time.”
Writing award medals were given to: Jason
Harvey, Estherville, for “On the Farm” and Megan
McGrauth, Graettinger, for “Interesting Facts
About Iowa.” Ruddy also presented the
Outstanding Junior award to Joshua (Newgard)
Link of Terril.
Medals were awarded to those Upward Bound
students who earned them in the Upward Bound
Olympics held on the campus of Iowa State
University in Ames in June. Several Spirit and
Sportsmanship Awards were presented for those
who displayed outstanding enthusiasm and
sportsmanship during the 2005 Upward Bound
Olympics. Spirit award winners were Katie
Newcomb of Spencer and Jacob Smith of Arnolds
Park. Sportsmanship medals went to Zachery
Iverson of Estherville and Kylie Carter of
Emmetsburg.
Highest GPA for the 2004-2005 year went to Kiley
Rosendahl, Algona; Most Improved GPA for the
year was presented to Brian Leek from
Estherville; Top Student Award was given to
Kristiana Salton, Ayrshire; and Top Bridge
Student Award went to Mike Metzen of Algona.
University of Okoboji Awards went to Brian Leek
of Estherville, Mike Metzen from Algona, Julia
Mohler of Graettinger, Joe Poyzer from
Estherville and Jessica Rigby of Spencer.
2004-2005 Upward Bound Student Hall of Fame
Inductees include: Brian Leek of Estherville,
Mike Metzen from Algona and Jessica Rigby of
Spencer.
The following individuals were inducted into the
2004-2005 Upward Bound Hall of Fame for their
outstanding support of the program:
Pam Harnden, Upward Bound Project Assistant;
Sandra Naig, Iowa Lakes Community College
Bookstore Coordinator; Rita Yates, Iowa Lakes
Community College Food Service personnel.
Also inducted into the 2004- 2005 Upward Bound
Hall of Fame were Donna and LaVern Leek and Dan
and Ann Rigby (parents of recent Upward Bound
graduates).
