SPRINT TRI-ATHLON RENAMED
AFTER SUPPORTER
The annual Sprint Tri-athlon held in Emmetsburg
in conjunction with the 4th of July celebration
has been renamed as a tribute to one of the
event’s biggest supporters.
The event will now be called the Bob McCartan
Memorial Scholarship Sprint Tri-Athlon, in
memory of a long-time participant.
McCartan was an active – and enthusiastic member
– of the Smith Wellness Center in Emmetsburg.
“Nearly every day Bob could be seen at the
Wellness Center – either at the pool, on the
treadmill or in the weight room getting his
daily work out,” said Deb Knight, Assistant to
the Wellness Center Director. “All the employees
and lifeguards enjoyed Bob and he always had an
amusing comment to share.”
This year, all funds raised at the Bob McCartan
Memorial Scholarship Sprint Tri-Athlon will be
placed in a scholarship fund.
“This is a fitting tribute to Bob,” said Bill
Lapczenski, Director of Auxiliary Services at
Iowa Lakes Community College.
The scholarship will be available for students
from Palo Alto County who are in one of the
college’s agricultural programs at the
Emmetsburg Campus. McCartan worked in the ag
field for many years. Those students planning to
transfer to a four-year college will receive
special consideration.
Individuals wishing to donate to this
scholarship may contact Shan Ray, Executive
Director of Institutional Advancement at Iowa
Lakes at 1-800-242-5106 ext. 491.
This year’s event will occur on Monday, July 4,
starting at 7 a.m. at Soper Park in Emmetsburg.
The Tri-Athlon includes a half-mile swim in Five
Island Lake, a 12-mile bike ride; and a 5K run.
