IOWA LAKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE: GET JAZZED AT SUMMER CAMP

Iowa Lakes Community College will be hosting the 25th Annual University of Okoboji Reggie Schive Summer Jazz Camp on the Estherville campus June 12-17.

The camp will provide five fun-filled, exciting and educationally packed days with some of the finest jazz educators in the country.

The headliners and staff of the University of Okoboji Summer Jazz Camp truly believe in what they do and strive to teach and share with students their years of knowledge and experience.

Headliners include Tony Gulizia, Joey Gulizia, Roger Neumann, Andy Hall, Kirk Garrison and Scott Hesse who are coming in from across the U.S., from L.A. to New York City. *(Bios listed below.)

Students will have the opportunity to study in private lessons, combos and big bands, improvisation, theory, arranging, history and software, as well as listen to their jazz mastery during master classes and performances.

The camp is sponsored by the Iowa Lakes Community College Music Department in Estherville. The new location provides students with air-conditioning in rehearsal rooms, dorm rooms and a brand new student center. The students' week-long study culminates in two performances on Friday.

There will be a different concert on each of the five evenings featuring music from the Big Band sound to Contemporary, Latin to Dixie Land. Look for the concert schedule to be released soon.

*HEADLINER BIOGRAPHIES

Tony Gulizia started his music career early, at the age of 8, working with his father, and, later, with Joey, his brother. Tony studied music at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. It was there the Gulizia Brothers were formed. In 1979, the talented musical duo began working, in conjunction with the Nebraska Arts Council, in the Artists in Schools program. By 1990, their involvement in music programs for youth had escalated to leadership in the Mid-America Arts Alliance, involving themselves increasingly in Artist in Schools programs spanning a seven-state region.

Joey Gulizia has been performing since the age of ten, and continues to perform as a professional musician. He has proven diversity by working in many musical situations such as a featured artist with the Omaha Symphony, Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, Nebraska Brass, and countless other musical groups including his own. He has entertained on many cruise ships and has performed in Japan, Europe and the Caribbean. Joey can be heard on many CD's, commercials, and soundtracks.

Roger Neumann, who plays the tenor, soprano and bari saxophones, flute and clarinet, was honored as the jazz composer and arranger of the year at the 20th Annual Jazz Tribute and Awards in Los Angeles along with internationally acclaimed jazz pianist, Herbie Hancock, John Levy, Annie Ross, and many more. Neumann said he is honored to be recognized by the Los Angeles Jazz Society. Besides being a busy arranger, composer and performer, Neumann has produced two CD’s entitled, “Introducing Roger Neumann’s Rather Large Band,” “Instant Heat!” and “This is my Lucky Day, featuring the vocal talents of his wife, Madeline Vergari. (Roger is originally from Spencer.)

Andy Hall is a professional bassist on both the acoustic and electric bass. Hall is a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. He is currently the jazz bass instructor at The University of Nebraska Omaha. For the past 23 years, Hall has played bass with the nationally known jazz vocalist, Marilyn Maye. In addition to performing, he spends a great deal of time teaching at jazz workshops, jazz camps, artist-in-residence programs and acts as an adjudicator for jazz festivals. Hall has performed concerts and taught workshops in Japan, Germany and Denmark.

Kirk Garrison, jazz trumpet artist, composer & arranger. Kirk is a professional musician residing in the Chicago area. He attended Mankato State University in his home state of Minnesota from 1978-1983. During a nine year United States Air Force Band career he developed his unique abilities as a lead trumpet player, creative jazz soloist and writer. One of the peaks of his military career was an assignment as musical director for a select band deployed to the Middle East during operation Desert Storm. Kirk left the Air Force in 1992 to complete his Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies at DePaul University (June 1995). Howard Reich, jazz critic for the Chicago Tribune wrote, "The spectacular trumpet solo that Kirk Garrison offered... reminded listeners why the Jazz Members Big Band stands among the best repertory units in the country." (Kirk is originally from Truman, Minn.)

Scott Hesse grew up in Sioux City, Iowa, where he began playing the guitar at age 14. Scott attended college at Eastern Illinois University where he studied for three years with New Orleans piano great Henry Butler. During his time in Illinois, Scott performed in several combos and, in 1991 and 1993, he was the recipient of the outstanding soloist award at the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival. Scott has two independently-produced recordings: Intuition (1998) and The Flame Within the Fire (2000).
