SPEECH CLASSES ‘MAKE THE
CONNECTION’
IN THE BUSINESS WORLD FOR
IOWA LAKES STUDENTS
The Board of Trustees of Iowa Lakes Community
College had the opportunity to learn how speech
classes ‘make the connection’ for students
interested in the business world.
Mari Miller Burns, Assistant Professor of
Speech, talked with the Trustees about the
different opportunities students have in speech
classes. To receive an Associate in Arts or
Associate in Science degree, students are
required to take Fundamentals of Speech
Communication. Other courses available to
enhance speech skills include: Public Speaking,
Interpersonal Communication and Intro to
Theatre.
In addition, three students (Matt Spiess, Eric
Phillips and Chris Mugge) from the new Wind
Energy and Turbine Technology program shared
with the Trustees the success they are enjoying
in the program. The students talked about the
construction process, courses taken thus far and
those in the future as well as potential job
prospects for them individually, in addition to
the potential the program has to recruit future
students.
Also during the meeting, the Trustees approved a
change order for the Technical Education
facility being built on the Emmetsburg Campus.
The change ensures higher fire safety standards
in the building.
In other business, the Trustees gave the college
President authorization to sign for the purchase
of a building in Spencer (Iowa
Lakes Nears Purchase of Gateway North Center in
Spencer); set the date of April 19 for a
public hearing; and approved the monthly bills.
