MCCARTAN SPRINT TRI-ATHLON PLANNED FOR JULY 4TH

Area residents are invited to participate in the Bob McCartan Memorial Scholarship Sprint Tri-Athlon planned for July 4th in Emmetsburg.

The McCartan Sprint Tri-Athlon is a swim/bike/run event at Five Island Lake. The event consists of a half-mile swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 5K run (3.1 miles). Relay teams are also invited to participate and are timed as a separate category.

The event begins at 7 a.m. at the Soper Park beach house located on the south end of Five Island Lake in Emmetsburg. The McCartan Sprint Tri-Athlon is coordinated by staff members of the Arthur & Audrey Smith Wellness Center on the Emmetsburg Campus of Iowa Lakes Community College.

Registrations can be obtained at the Smith Wellness Center or one hour before the event on July 4, at Soper Park. Registration fee prior to July 4 is $20 per person and $25 the day of the event. Each entrant will receive a T-shirt and trophies will be awarded to first place male, female and relay winners.

The event was recently renamed as a tribute to long-time supporter Bob McCartan. Individuals who may not want to participate, but would like to contribute to the McCartan scholarship may contact Shan Ray, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement at Iowa Lakes at 1-800-242-5106 ext. 491.

The Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a number of other family activities in the park that day which includes a fireworks display over Five Island Lake that evening.
