TRUSTEES LEARN ABOUT POPULAR EMMETSBURG
PROGRAM
The members of the Board of Trustees of Iowa
Lakes Community College were given an update
Tuesday afternoon on the Motorcycle and Small
Engine Technology program based at the
Emmetsburg Campus.
Matt Bohl, Instructor/Coordinator of the
program, talked about the new Technology
Education Center in which the program recently
relocated. The new facilities offer additional
space as well as improved ventilation and
lighting. Bohl said enhanced power and air lines
were an excellent add-on. And, the students were
particularly pleased with the air conditioning
in the shop – especially during the recent hot
days. He also shared that the program curriculum
is undergoing a facelift with the on-the-job
training moving to the summer months and the
coursework being expanded to a full, two years.
Three students addressed the Trustees. Andrew
Staton, a student who ranked seventh in the
nation in the SkillsUSA motorcycle service
competition; Casey Cook, who placed sixth in the
national competition in Power Equipment
Technology; and Andrew Camp, a fellow motorcycle
student. All three will return this fall for the
second year of the Motorcycle and Small Engine
program which will provide them with an
Associate in Applied Science degree.
The meeting opened with public hearings. The
Trustees reviewed bids that were opened on the
Algona Campus Exterior renovation and awarded
the bid to Christensen Construction for just
over $110,000. The completion of the upper floor
of the Technology Education Center was the
second action to be reviewed. The Trustees gave
the go-ahead to Midstates Builders of Spencer
for just over $383,000.
In other business, the Trustees approved the
return of land to Emmet County which was given
to the college in the event it chose to
construct a Fine Arts facility adjacent to the
Estherville Regional Wellness Center. Current
plans are to construct the facility on the
northwest corner of the campus, attached to the
existing campus buildings.
The meeting also included reports from the
Trustees on boards and councils on which they
serve.
The next meeting of the Iowa Lakes Board of
Trustees will be Tuesday, Aug. 23 in Algona.
