IOWA LAKES JAZZ CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The last day of competition in the 30th Annual Jazz Band Contest at Iowa Lakes Community College has been completed. Winners from today are listed below:

Class 2A
1.      Prairie Valley High School – Deb Fritcher, Director
2.      South O’Brien High School, Jazz I – Joel Pedersen, Director
3.   Woodward - Granger High School – Ted Heggen & Jerry Peoples, Directors

Fifteen bands competed in Thursday’s competition.  Over the three days of competition, 46 bands from 41 schools competed for the top three places in each of five divisions.  Each band was evaluated by a team of professional jazz musicians who recognized outstanding performances and offered tips for improvement. 

The goal of the Iowa Lakes Jazz Band competition is to allow students to test their jazz skills against other high schools prior to regional and state contests.

The results from the other two days of the contest follow:

Class A
1.   East Greene – Dianna Hanna, Director
2.      George-Little Rock – Jay Downie, Director
3.      Aurelia – Jason Heeren, Director 

Class 1A
1.      Southern Cal High School – Tom Plummer, Director
2.      Central Lyon High School – Sherwin Langholdt, Director
3.      Kingsley-Pierson High School – Randy Washburn, Director 

Class 3A
1.      MOC Floyd Valley High School, Mary Hulstein
2.      Storm Lake High School, Frank Hoskins
3.      Spirit Lake High School, Jazz I, Pam Houser

Class 4A
1.      Sioux City North I – Larry Kisor, Director
2.      Sioux City North II – Kevin Linder, Director
3.      West High School, Sioux City – Keith Weigandt, Director
