FUNDS DISTRIBUTED TO HELP
STAMP OUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Funds
left over from the visit of Tanya Brown to
Emmetsburg last spring have been distributed to
benefit groups which fight domestic violence.
Tanya
Brown spoke to some 800 people when she appeared
in late April. Tanya re-dedicated her life to
educating others to help stamp out domestic
violence after the murder of her sister, Nicole
Brown Simpson.
Her
appearance was coordinated by the Child Care Club
of Iowa Lakes, under the leadership of Shayla
Thompson, club president.
“This
project provided our Child Care and Early
Childhood Education Students with advocacy
momentum for several issues that impact young
children and their families,” said Marsha Swanson,
Professor of Child Care and Early Childhood
Education. “It was a terrific example of what can
be done with college and community partners
working together. I am grateful for the leadership
provided by our students, Shayla Thompson, from
Graettinger, and Tresa Chester, from Sheldon.”
Thompson said she was pleased with the support she
received.
“The
Tanya Brown event proved to be an amazing success
due to the support & encouragement received from
the surrounding communities, the college, and my
fellow classmates,” Thompson said. “Tanya has
informed me this was by far the largest speaking
engagement on domestic violence that she has done
in the last 10 years since her sister’s death. I
hope people continue to reach out and help educate
others about domestic violence prevention.”
To that
end, the organizing committee met recently and
closed out the checking account for the event.
The
largest check went to CAASA – the Centers Against
Assault and Sexual Abuse – for just over $1,200.
Other agencies receiving funds included the Family
Crisis Center of North Iowa in Algona, $200; the
Family Crisis Center of Northwest Iowa in Sioux
Center, $175; and, Counseling at Iowa Lakes, $200.
In addition, several videotapes will be made
available to ensure that those who missed the
presentation will be able to watch it.
Much
like Tanya Brown herself, the Child Care Club will
continue to educate others on building healthy
relationships.
“The
Iowa Lakes Community College Child Care Club is
continuing involvement in domestic violence
prevention and awareness,” said Swanson.
