WILLIAM SHIELDS SIGNS WITH IOWA LAKES
Iowa Lakes Community College Head Cross Country
Coach Mike Nichols has announced the signing of
William J. Shields Jr. to a National Junior
College Letter of Intent.
William competed in cross country and track
while attending Blue Earth Area High School.
Shields ran outstanding times in high school
including a 16:05 5K in cross country and a 2:01
800 Meter Dash in track. In addition, he was a
section and conference champion in cross
country. He also received many honors including
being a two-time all state performer in cross
country; all state in the 800 and 4 x 400 meter
relays in track; and, was voted his school’s
track & field MVP.
According to Coach Nichols, “If William’s times
and accomplishments are any indication; he will
be a top runner on our team. He should compete
very well at this level.”
William is the son of Randy and Merry McGowen
and is enrolled in the Criminal Justice program
at Iowa Lakes Community College.
Iowa Lakes began recruiting students for cross
country early last year. Three students
advanced to the national competition in
Lawrence, Kan., in October of last year.
In addition to cross country, students may
participate in intercollegiate sports of
baseball, softball, volleyball, golf and
basketball at Iowa Lakes.
