WILLIAM SHIELDS SIGNS WITH IOWA LAKES

Iowa Lakes Community College Head Cross Country Coach Mike Nichols has announced the signing of William J. Shields Jr. to a National Junior College Letter of Intent.

William competed in cross country and track while attending Blue Earth Area High School.  Shields ran outstanding times in high school including a 16:05 5K in cross country and a 2:01 800 Meter Dash in track.  In addition, he was a section and conference champion in cross country.  He also received many honors including being a two-time all state performer in cross country; all state in the 800 and 4 x 400 meter relays in track; and, was voted his school’s track & field MVP.

According to Coach Nichols, “If William’s times and accomplishments are any indication; he will be a top runner on our team.  He should compete very well at this level.”

William is the son of Randy and Merry McGowen and is enrolled in the Criminal Justice program at Iowa Lakes Community College.

Iowa Lakes began recruiting students for cross country early last year.  Three students advanced to the national competition in Lawrence, Kan., in October of last year.

In addition to cross country, students may participate in intercollegiate sports of baseball, softball, volleyball, golf and basketball at Iowa Lakes.
