TRUSTEES LEARN ABOUT STUDENT SUCCESSES
AT NATIONAL COMPETITION
The Board of Trustees of Iowa Lakes Community
College held their monthly meeting Tuesday
afternoon in Emmetsburg and learned about
the recent successes several students had at
the national SkillsUSA-VICA competition last
month.
Ten of the 15 Iowa Lakes students advancing
to the nationals were honored by placing in
the top 10. One student, Matthew Kuennen,
(who won third place in Motorcycle Service)
spoke with the Trustees about the importance
of the SkillsUSA-VICA competition and the
value they gained from attending the
convention. Stacy Zylstra, college
organizer for the SkillsUSA-VICA contests,
showed a PowerPoint presentation
highlighting the trip. The
SkillsUSA-VICA mission is based upon the
premise that the craftsperson and technician
must have more than just technical skills to
be successful in today's business climate.
Also during the meeting, an agreement was
approved to continue working with Head Start
at the Emmetsburg Campus of Iowa Lakes.
The meeting also included information about
final training agreements with area firms;
and data concerning expanded plans for the
Technology Center which is currently under
construction on the Emmetsburg Campus.
The next meeting will be on Tuesday, August
24 at the Algona Campus of Iowa Lakes.
