STUDENTS VISIT YOUTH EMERGENCY SHELTER

Students in the Human Services and Disability Club at Iowa Lakes Community College recently visited several agencies in Des Moines to find out more about job opportunities in the human services field.

Iowa Lakes Community College students visited the Youth Emergency Services and Shelter (Y.E.S.S.) in Des Moines in November and learned more about services provided to young people who have no other living alternative. In addition, they delivered several boxes of personal care items and clothing which were donated by area residents.

The shelter’s goal is to work with teens to provide a safe and temporary place to live while providing supportive services such as school, life skills programs and employment opportunities.

Students also toured the Younker Rehabilitation Center at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Those taking the field trip included: Laura Presthus and Megan Klemm, Algona; Heidi Nau, St. James, Minn.; Beckie Holmes, Arnolds Park; Holly Goldtrap, Lakota; Malloree Lockwood, Swea City; Desirae Kerr, Milford; Jessica Byriel and Anna Sanderson, Estherville; Lavonne Lotz, Pocahontas; Katie Stewart, Spencer; Toni Kinnetz, Spirit Lake; and, Pam Anderson and Amber Abbenhaus, Terril.

The Human Services and Disability Studies Program is a two-year program at the Estherville Campus of Iowa Lakes Community College. The program provides students with a variety of experiences which can focus on a number of areas in the helping professions.
