UPWARD BOUND SUMMER AWARDS BANQUET RECOGNIZES STUDENTS

Fifty-eight students were honored Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at an Upward Bound Summer Awards Banquet in the Iowa Lakes Community College Student Center in Emmetsburg.  They were recognized for their dedication to academic excellence and their desire to earn a college degree.

The students' projects and exhibits representing a career of achievements were on display.

"It is always fascinating to see how the students channel their creativity," said Mary Faber, Director of the Upward Bound Program.  "I know they enjoy participating in these projects, and during the Summer Awards Banquet they share it all with their families, friends and the Upward Bound Staff."

Awards were given in the following categories:
Critical Thinking instructor Lisa Oberg presented the class medal to Matt Hatland, Graettinger.  Certificates were given to Mike Metzen, Algona, and Anastasia Marchand, Spencer.

English instructor Bobbi Fedderson presented English awards. The medal winner was Tawny Smith, Spencer.  Honorable Mention certificates were awarded to Kela Hansen, Emmetsburg, and Matt Hatland. A Creative Writing medal was presented to Matt Metzen for his poem "Confusion" and to Brian Leek, Estherville, for his poem "There Were No Men."  Reading Strategies medal winner was Tyler Crone, Spencer, honorable mention went to Graettinger student Kyle Harding.

Math instructor Jeanette Frambach awarded the math medal to Matt Hatland. Honorable Mention certificates went to Thomas Markeson, Estherville; Mike Metzen; Audrey Mogler, Westbend; and Kiley Rosendahl, Algona.

Mike Metzen received the Science medal from Science instructor Jed Hammen. Certificate winners in the Science class included: Kenny Anderson, Wallingford; Thomas Markeson; Maya Odom,  Graettinger; and Tawny Smith, Webb.

Spanish instructor Molly Graettinger presented Thomas Markeson the Spanish medal.  Honorable Mention awards went to Kacy Farhmann, Cylinder; Matt Hatland; Michelle Lyster, Estherville; Maya Odom; and, Casey Brower and Jessica Rigby, both of Spencer.

Medals were awarded to those Upward Bound students who earned them in the Upward Bound Olympics held on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames on June 25, 2004.  Spirit and Sportsmanship Awards were presented for those who displayed outstanding enthusiasm and sportsmanship during the 2004 Upward Bound Olympics.  Spirit award winner was Tom Sorenson, Terril.  The Sportsmanship medal went to Kiley Rosendahl.

Highest GPA for 2003-2004 went to Kacy Fahrmann; Most Improved GPA for 2003-2004 was presented to Tim Gardner, Spencer; Top Student Award was given to Jacob Elliott, Spencer; and, Top Bridge Student Award went to Amanda Elbert, Algona.

University of Okoboji Awards were presented to Amanda Elbert; Emily Merryman, Spencer; Sam Fahrmann, Cylinder; and Tom Rutledge, Estherville.

2003-2004 Upward Bound Student Hall of Fame Inductees include: Melissa Albrant, Emmetsburg and Amanda Elbert.

The following individuals were inducted into the 2003-2004 Upward Bound Hall of Fame for their outstanding support of the Upward Bound program: Courtney Carmichael, Emmetsburg, former Upward Bound Science Instructor; Bobbi Fedderson of Milford, summer Upward Bound Instructor; Deb Rogers-Knight, Emmetsburg, assistant to Smith Wellness Center Director; and, James and Angie Elbert, Algona; and Dawn Kollasch, Emmetsburg; parents of
recent Upward Bound graduates.
