FARM EXPO PLANNED AT IOWA LAKES
COMMUNITY COLLEGE FARM LAB

The Farm Lab of Iowa Lakes Community College will host its annual Farm Field Day and Expo on Thursday, September 9 at the test plot site.

All area residents, as well as past alumni of Iowa Lakes, are invited to tour the Palo Alto Corn and Soybean Growers Association plot, various agricultural exhibits and the Farm Laboratory starting at 4 p.m.  

Van tours will be given from 4 to 5:45 p.m. and again from 7-8 p.m.  The tours will show off demonstrations in planting depth and nitrogen application as well as the student plots and the rotational grazing area. 

A free dinner will be served at 5:45 p.m.  At 6:15 p.m., Jim Dickson will speak on food safety issues.  On display at the event will be Tom McGraw of Midwest Independent Soil Samplers; ISU Extension; and Iowa Lakes Community College.  In addition, Nadiel Pacheco Kawalski, a communications specialist from the Castrolanda Coop in Parana, Brazil, will have a display and answer questions about crops in Brazil.

All attendees will have a chance to register for several door prizes including a grand prize of $50 worth of ethanol, courtesy of the Palo Alto Corn and Soybean Growers Association.  There will also be a ‘yield guessing’ contest.  The winner of that contest will win $50 worth of soy biodiesel from the Palo Alto Corn and Soybean Growers Association.

Representatives of seed companies will be on hand to visit with Expo attendees.  Those companies include:  Agrigold, Asgrow, Croplan, Crows, DeKalb, Dyna Gro, Golden Harvest, Latham Seeds, LG Seeds, NK Seeds, Pfister, Pioneer, Prairie Brand, Sands of Iowa, Stine, Wensman, Wyffels.  Donations of farm chemicals include:  BASF, Dupont Agriculture & Nutrition, MaxYield Cooperative and the Monsanto Company.

The Farm Expo will be held rain or shine at the College Farm Laboratory located 5 miles west of Emmetsburg on U.S. Highway 18 and then 3/8 mile north on the gravel (410th Ave.).
