BROWN DEDICATES LIFE TO STAMP OUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Ten years after the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson, Tanya Brown,
the sister of Nicole, has re-dedicated her life to educating
others to help stamp out domestic violence. And, northwest Iowans
will have a chance to hear her message in late April.
Tanya Brown will speak April 26 at Iowa Lakes Community College in
Emmetsburg as an invited guest of the Child Care Club of Iowa
Lakes, spearheaded by Club President Shayla Thompson. Brown will
first speak to students and staff of the college as well as area
high schools at 2 p.m. on the 26th. Then, Brown will speak free
to the public at 7 p.m. that evening.
Tanya is the youngest sister of the late Nicole Brown Simpson.
She endured an agonizing nine-month trial, civil trial, custody
battle and media invasion following the murder of her sister.
Seven years ago, Tanya
Brown made a conscious decision to change the course of her life
and began a crusade to help others. Brown is the co-founder of
The Nicole Brown Charitable Foundation. She is certified as a
Domestic Violence Counselor, Court Advocate and Life &
Relationship Coach. In 2002 Tanya became certified in: "When
Domestic Violence comes to the Workplace" through Blue Shield of
California.
She has
channeled her life experiences to educate, empower and guide
audiences throughout the nation on domestic violence prevention
and how to build healthy relationships.
The Child Care Club has
been coordinating Brown's appearances. In recent weeks, they have
been working with an organizing committee. In addition to
Thompson, that team includes two representatives of the Centers
Against Assault and Sexual Abuse (CAASA) - Rhonda Dean and Jacquie
Rothrock; Jane Whitmore, Emmetsburg Publishing Editor; Tresa
Haupert, Child Care Club member; faculty members Marsha Swanson,
Jamie Simpson, Reneé Jedlicka and Mary Gengerke; Barb Grandstaff,
continuing education; Tom Brotherton, dean of the Emmetsburg
Campus; Julie Carlson, enrollment management dean; Bill Lapczenski,
student senate advisor; Stacy Zylstra, administrative assistant;
Patti Tedesco, counselor; Linda Wiegman, career counselor; and, ex
officio members Rob & Joy Klein, Thompson's relatives from
California who serve as contacts on the project.
