LARGE NUMBER OF STUDENTS SIGN UP FOR
ALGONA NURSING PROGRAM
Just over two dozen individuals are on their way to reaching their
dream - thanks to the Algona Center of Iowa Lakes Community
College.
Twenty-five men and women of all ages have begun to take evening
and weekend classes to prepare themselves to begin classes next
fall toward achieving a Practical Nursing diploma.
The idea began a few months ago, when Dr. Michael Hupfer,
President of Iowa Lakes Community College met with area hospital
officials and staff members and identified a need for more nurses.
"Not only will this provide our Algona area hospitals and care
centers with prospective nursing candidates, but it also provides
educational opportunity for people who work or have child care
responsibilities during the day," said Hupfer.
Participating students are taking all of their classes on evenings
and weekends so that they can continue with their regular jobs.
This fall, students are taking preparatory classes such as Human
Growth and Development and Human Anatomy. In the spring, classes
in Normal Nutrition and Human Physiology will be offered. In
addition other courses such as Chemistry, Sociology, Psychology
and English are offered so future students can have many of the
general education classes handled prior to the start of the
Practical Nursing work.
It's not too late to join this group of individuals, according to
Trudy Kattner, Algona Center Director. Those interested may
