STUDENT-ATHLETES HIGHLIGHT MEETING
OF IOWA LAKES BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Board of Trustees of Iowa Lakes Community College heard a report on athletics at the college at their meeting late Tuesday afternoon.

Julie Carlson, Dean of Enrollment Management, began the report pointing out that student-athletes at Iowa Lakes have averaged a 2.6 grade point average over the last two years – that’s a B- average.  “Not only do they excel in their sport, but they’re also achieving academically as well,” Carlson said.

Athletics Director Darin Moeller pointed out that students can participate in volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf.   Eric Willey, a student-athlete from Estherville, who participates in basketball and golf addressed the Trustees.  In addition, Mandy Brant of Terril talked about playing basketball for the Laker women.

Also during the meeting, the Trustees gave the go-ahead to pursue grant funds through a special Accelerated Career Education (ACE) program administered by the Iowa Department of Economic Development.  College staff will explore the viability of enhancing curriculum and continuing education opportunities for those with agricultural interests in the five-county region served by Iowa Lakes in addition to serving those throughout northwest Iowa.

In other business, the Trustees were formally introduced to Mary Mohni (Mow-knee), the person who will take over as Executive Dean of the Estherville Campus effective Jan. 2, 2003.  They also approved preliminary training agreements as well as retraining agreements; and, listened to reports from various committees of the Board of Trustees.

The next meeting of the Board of Trustees will be on Tuesday, December 17.
